What issues need to be considered in the performance of automotive LED strips?

Automobile LED strip refers to the strip or lamp made of LED technology in the car. It mainly uses high-brightness LED lighting and will become the main feature of future cars. This is due to the many advantages of LED compared to traditional incandescent lighting solutions. basic advantage.

What issues need to be considered in the performance of automotive LED strips

The performance of LED car strip needs to consider the following aspects:

First: Efficiency (lumens per watt)

Automotive LED strips produce more light output per unit of electrical energy consumed than standard incandescent bulbs. But when compared with halogen lamps, the advantage of LED’s actual light output is not obvious. The latest LEDs have excellent lumen-per-watt figures, but some figures are achieved under optimized conditions, not usually at maximum output. Generally speaking, when the LED current increases, the light output does not increase linearly. So even though an LED puts out x lumens at 0.5A, it won’t put out 2x lumens at 1.0A.

Second: Reliability and service life

The expected service life of automotive LED strips is 50,000 hours, compared to 20,000 hours for halogen tungsten lamps and 3,000 hours for tungsten incandescent lamps. Compared with incandescent lamps, automotive LED strips have a solid structure and are not easily affected by vibration, and the light output brightness will not decrease significantly during use. Lighting solutions based on multiple LEDs also have the benefit of “redundancy,” allowing the lighting to continue to operate even if one LED fails. Proper use of LEDs (especially proper temperature control of LEDs) can effectively extend the life expectancy of LEDs. On the contrary, if the temperature is too high, the LED is easily damaged. The application of LEDs in automotive lighting also involves many legal definition issues. Most countries have a clear definition of a brake light or headlight failure – the light is on or off. However, for lamps with multiple LEDs, it is difficult to accurately define whether the lamp has been damaged. Manufacturers and legislators are defining how LEDs are used.

Third: Directionality

Another key feature is the way the automotive LED strip emits light. Unlike incandescent lights, automotive LED strips emit light through only one surface, which is good for headlights and navigation map lighting applications, but may not be suitable for other lighting applications such as cabin lights.

Fourth: Response speed

Taking brake lights and direction indicator tubes as an example, assuming that the vehicle speed is 125 km/h, that is, 35 m/s, the hot start time of incandescent lamps is about 250 milliseconds, and the fast-response car LED strips can be advanced by about 8 milliseconds. A brake warning is issued at a distance of 10 meters, thereby effectively avoiding car collisions. The same goes for the indicator lights.
